I had a long history of chronic pain and tension from old injuries and strain I had ignored for too long: poor body-mechanics and posture, working too hard, not taking care etc. At the ripe old age of 32, I was broken-down and done.
Spyrotone began as intuitive movement, evolving out of an effort to rehabiltate myself. Over a period of a year or so, I found a simple movement of opening the hand and turning the wrist and elbow that felt so good. I found I had a great deal of control of my spine through my hands and arms, able to stretch very small, isolated muscles in my neck, shoulders and back and that I could apply force internally to influence alignment of my rib joints and spine.
Turning one hand in relation to the other, etc., I discovered a form that kept expanding. It looked a lot like tai chi, and people asked me..."are you doing tai chi?" To which I would reply..."I don't know." As it progressed, I speculated I could take it deeper if only I could increase the resistance, however without sacrificing form. Hence the Spyrotone apparatus.
I later developed a yoga practice and trained to teach. In the process, I learned the underlying objectives of yoga to be consistent with Spyrotone: balance and unity between opposite sides of the body, in posture and movement. Also, the breathing exercises were most beneficial.
Yoga is still my primary practice, for which there is no substitute, but we all know how tedious it can be. The structure is time consuming and inconvenient. Spyrotone is fun and to the point. There is no other method or device that faciliates an effective form such as this. Nothing comes closer to yoga or tai chi, extending the effects of practice and providing a way to maintain when I don't have the time to workout, which is a lot of the time.
Furthermore, Spyrotone keeps you on track, giving you something consistent to follow. That's the hardest and most important part about learning traditional forms. You must have a teacher and lots of discipline. Spyrotone is a lot like training wheels for practicing good form. You put it on and go.
Basically, Spyrotone restored my strength and flexibility (and happiness) to a point beyond I had ever thought or felt possible. I have been working very hard to produce a user-friendly model and method of learning which is direct and to the point. That time is coming soon with an anticipated release later in '08.
